A SNEAK PEEK FROM CHAPTER 5 EARLY CONCERT SURPRISES
AEROSMITH - Gimmie That Scarf!
In 1977 Aerosmith made their first trip to Nashville to perform at the Municipal Auditorium. It was the Rocks tour. We were huge Aerosmith fans and were very excited to see them in concert again. Brian and I had seen them open for Rod Stewart and Faces, so we knew this was going to be a great show.
This was a sold out concert. In fact, it was probably over-sold, because it was so crowded on the arena floor. At one point I remember picking up my feet and getting tossed around the floor by the shifting of the crowd. There were many of us there that night and I remember several decided to find a seat on the sides or in the balcony.
At one point in the night I found my way back to the front of the stage, in front of Steven Tyler’s microphone stand (with the scarves). Aerosmith had electric fans blowing on the band that gave a neat look as their hair blew while performing. I’m sure they were there to also keep them cool.
While I was down front, Steven Tyler was singing right in front of me with his eyes closed. The wind from the fans started blowing the scarves from his microphone stand in my direction. I remember thinking how much I would like to get a scarf souvenir, but I didn’t want to turn over the mic stand, especially during a song. Then I saw Steven grab the mic stand, so I leaned across the stage barrier and grabbed the one scarf blowing in the wind. Steven must have felt the tug and pulled his way. When he did, the scarf ripped and I got my souvenir! He looked at me with this very mad look in his eyes! He picked up the microphone stand (while holding on to the scarves) and acted as if he was going to throw it at me, then he went to the other side of the stage.
I carried a piece of that scarf in my wallet for years, until it got so nasty that even I didn’t want to look at it. It was great to show off at parties.
