2012-13 Broadway Series At TPACOn Tuesday April 3rd, 2010 the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) announced the Broadway Series shows coming to the elaborate Andrew Jackson Hall.  The announcement was open to the current season ticket holders and media.  This announcement was also done in style!

The lights went down in Andrew Jackson Hall while the huge video screen displayed the logo of “The Lion King”.  That alone brought cheers, but when the New York Broadway star from The Lion King , Tshidi Manye, took center stage to sing “The Circle of Life”, instantly the cheers got a lot louder!

TPAC’s president and CEO, Kathleen O’Brien took the stage for a short interview with Tshidi before announcing the remaining Broadway Musicals coming to TPAC for the 2012-13 season.  Kathleen gave a description of each of the six shows included with the season tickets and also described a few extra shows including the 1960′s hit comedy movie made into a musical and directed by the legendary Jerry Lewis in Nashville, TN, “The Nutty Professor” (they also gave the audience a few numbers from the show’s Michael Andrews).

Here’s the official press announcement for the upcoming 2012-13 Broadway Series at TPAC which turns Nashville from “Music City” into “Musical City”!

    Musical City

The wait is over. The most anticipated announcement in Nashville’s performing arts community is here, as the Tennessee Performing Arts Center raises the curtain on the six Broadway titles from its 2012-13 HCA/TriStar Broadway Series, plus two Broadway “specials,” that will make our city not just Music City… but Musical City.

In a presentation to season ticket holders, special guests, and press on Tuesday, President and CEO Kathleen O’Brien unveiled the new season, which will conclude in 2013 with a four-week run of the awe-inspiring, Tony Award®-winning hit Disney’s The Lion King. The season includes beloved classics like Cole Porter’s Anything Goes and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, the acrobatic off-Broadway smash Traces, plus new favorites Flashdance and Catch Me If You Can.

“These six thrilling shows represent the best of Broadway and TPAC’s commitment to bringing diverse and dynamic entertainment to Nashville,” O’Brien said. “From time-tested classics and fresh new productions to the captivating style of cirque and record-breaking spectacles, the productions in our next season will excite and delight audiences of all ages. We’re proud to offer a season that will have both an immense economic impact on our community and a powerful entertainment impact on our audience.”

In addition to the six shows in the season ticket series, the HCA/TriStar Broadway at TPAC season will feature two music-centered specials, with both American Idiot and Rock of Ages making their Nashville debuts.

“This year, we are having a little fun with our beloved Nashville’s famous moniker. We are asking our audiences and all of Nashville to consider our town a home for music lovers, musical living, and one of the nation’s premier destinations for musical theater and the performing arts. With a season full of popular music, from Cole Porter to Green Day, we believe next season is a perfect fit for Nashville’s national dominance as the home of music.”

TRACES, which has been called “a whole new kind of awe-inspiring theatre” (NBC TV), is spectacularly anti-spectacle, relying instead on the fantastic abilities of the performers, individuals who appear to be nothing more than a group of friends, just as easygoing, affable, and potentially clumsy as the guy next door—until they unleash ninety minutes of heart-stopping acrobatics and unbridled energy that leave audiences breathless and exhilarated.
